The town of Te Awamutu boasts a number of things to see and do outdoors, including heritage trails, gardens and outdoor pursuits.
One of the most impressive walking trails in the Te Awamutu area is Maungatautari Ecological Island Reserve, a vast 3,400 hectare sanctuary for endangered native species. Recognised as an internationally significant restoration project, the reserve's guided night tours also provide the rare chance to experience the magical atmosphere of a New Zealand forest at night.
The Te Awamutu Rose Gardens are home to magnificent and unique blooms, earning the town the title of 'Rosetown'. The Gardens have a selection of landscaped lawns, walkways, trees, ponds, fountains, gardens and playgrounds.
Rock climbing enthusiasts can experience some of the best climbs in Wharepapa South while trampers will appreciate the bush-clad ancient volcano in Pirongia Forest Park.
