Waikato river

Waikato, the Maori word for 'flowing water', also refers to the river which runs through the region.

The Waikato River is the longest in New Zealand and provides much of the life-force to the region, especially the vast agricultural landscapes, and generates a large proportion of New Zealand's clean, green energy through hydro-power.

There are also eight oxbow lakes running on the river, including Lake Karapiro, which are popular spots for rowing, swimming, boating and fishing.
